On 26th January 1771, Josiah Barnes, (Robert's great-great-great grandfather) started his 7 year apprenticeship with Joseph Bradbury forging pocket knife blades, a strong family tradition in engineering, (7 generations); and later medecine, (4 generations - see Dr John Morrison Barnes CBE, Dictionary of National Biography, Vol. 1970-1980). These two great professions have been united in the family for over 100 years.
