In the section below, you can learn a little of our family's 230 year experience in craft trades and engineering.
John Barnes, (1818-1893), spring knife cutler and one of Sheffield's "Little Mesters", and Robert's great-grandfather. According to the 1881 census, he employed 8 men in 1881 in his workshop. From a crayon drawing about 1848.">
With his father, he built up the business during Sheffield's boom time in the first part of the century, visiting and exporting to the USA, particularly the Southern States, through the port of Charlestown, Carolina. This all came to a halt during the Civil War, started in 1860, during and after which the cutlery industry declined, as trade tariffs were imposed and their
local steel and cutlery industries started up and gained strength.
After his death, the business was continued by his third son, Edward and grandsons, until about 1920.
CAD: "The RISC pays off" - with proCAD+. Our CAD system is David Snell's proCAD+, which handles both our clients' previous Microdesigner drawings, drawing exchange format (DXF) and (DRW) format. proCAD+ runs on low energy consumption machines with StrongARM chips and RISC OS4 Operating Systems, which is a considerable improvement on alternative operating systems.
